The essentials of e-Way Bills under GST — when they’re needed, how long they’re valid, and the rules for extending, cancelling, and rejecting them.

An e-Way Bill (Electronic Way Bill) is a document required for the movement of goods worth more than ₹50,000 in value. It is generated on the government e-Way Bill portal (ewaybillgst.gov.in) and carries a unique 12-digit e-Way Bill Number (EBN) that must accompany the consignment.

Whenever there is movement of goods with a consignment value exceeding ₹50,000 — whether for a supply, for reasons other than supply (such as returns or branch/stock transfers), or for an inward supply from an unregistered person. Some states and notified goods have their own thresholds.

Any registered person who causes the movement of goods — the consignor (supplier), the consignee (recipient), or the transporter. Unregistered persons and transporters can also generate an e-Way Bill when they are the ones moving the goods.

Validity is based on distance and starts the moment Part-B (vehicle details) is first entered. For regular cargo it is one day for every 200 km (or part thereof); for Over Dimensional Cargo (ODC) it is one day for every 20 km.

The generator can cancel an e-Way Bill within 24 hours of generation if the goods are not transported or the details are wrong — but not once it has been verified in transit by an officer. The other party can reject it within 72 hours of generation (or before delivery, whichever is earlier) if the consignment does not pertain to them.

Moving goods without a valid e-Way Bill is an offence under GST. The penalty is ₹10,000 or the amount of tax sought to be evaded, whichever is higher, and the goods and the conveyance may be detained or seized until the dues are paid.

The person in charge of the conveyance must carry the invoice, bill of supply, or delivery challan, along with the e-Way Bill number — either as a physical copy or mapped to an RFID device embedded on the vehicle.

What are the Safe / Critical / Rescue bands?

They grade each active bill by how much NIC validity time is left. Safe means plenty of time, Critical means it’s running low, and Rescue means it has just expired and needs action on the portal. The bands use the authoritative NIC validity clock, not your local time.

Which NIC actions can I take from onlinePOD?
